Survey of Boyhood Reviews This assignment requires you to research and summarize reviews of Richard Linklater’s 2014 film Boyhood and then provide an assessment of them. Its purpose is to provide you with practice researching, synthesizing, and analyzing materials related to a given topic. As part of the assignment, you must also show that you can follow MLA guidelines for parenthetical citations and for a works cited page. For the research component of the assignment, you must find find five reviews or review-essays about Boyhood. Make sure to choose a range of different opinions about the film (love, hate, indifference) as well as a range of publication types (newspapers, magazines, liberal, conservative). We will cover appropriate research techniques in class. Once you have chosen your five reviews, you must write about them in the following way: Introduction: Your introduction should highlight, in one or two paragraphs, the themes and debates you discovered across all the reviews you read. In other words, your introduction should focus on explaining trends evident in the reviews as a whole rather than the content of any one individual review. Your introduction should contain a thesis statement that articulates your assessment of the reviews you have researched. Body Paragraphs: Your body paragraphs should summarize and paraphrase individual sources in detail. Be sure to begin each paragraph with a topic sentence that effectively transitions from the previous sentence. Be sure to quote, paraphrase, and summarize as needed–but especially to quote. Be sure to cite your sources properly. Conclusion: Your conclusion should provide, in at least two paragraphs, your own take on the debates you have outlined in the reviews. Which critics do you agree/disagree with and why? How has your research altered your understanding of the film? What, ultimately, is your assessment of the totality of the reviews about the film? Works Cited Page: Your works cited page should be in proper MLA format and the citations should be listed in alphabetical order.
