Jose Eduardo succeeds in crafting a compelling fictional book involving a gecko believed to be a reincarnation of a dead man. Felix Ventura living in Angola aligns memories to needy people who are looking for a new identity or have something to hide from the past. However for someone to be sold the memory of the past, one has to pay some money which is his source of living. Felix beats his chest by stipulating that he invent dreams for people. He thinks what he does is an advanced kind of literature (pg34). One exciting thing happens when he is approached by a Portuguese journalist whom he not only wants a historical past but a new identity as well.The Book of Chameleon Essay Sample
The journalist even adds that he wishes he was baptized by him (pg86). Having been paid a lucrative initial amount, Felix decides to craft an identity of a man named Jose Buchman. Jose had an exemplary reputation during the pre-colonial period which fascinates the journalist. Felix realizes that the amount quoted as the pay require more than a history which makes him fabricate documents for the journalist with the name Jose Buchman. He hands him a passport, drivers license, detailed family history and some photographs to support the assertions. Out of deep curiosity, this journalist travels to the ancestral home of Buchman in search of evidence. Fiction starts to transform into reality when ‘Buchman’ returns with evidence. Felix had managed to instill in him that the history of dead people can indeed be lined up to the living men. Buchman returns with photographs of a slender old man with white hair who resembles the old fallen prince which genuinely reaffirms that truly people reincarnate. He stipulates that he had traced the man in the morning and at night which confirms Felix invention.
At one time he reckons how he was able to trace a lost friend in Germany without knowing after the description of a traffic light. He depicts that if he were able to trace her, he would be able to trace his ‘mother’, Eva Miller. Felix is amazed when he receives a letter from ‘Buchman’ telling him of how happy he was for finding his mother after a long search. The family photo he handed him coincide with the one displayed by his mother confirming the invention. The fiction had transformed into truth which leaves Felix stupefied.
