INSTRUCTIONS After reading, carefully assessing, and summarizing bell hooks’ central argument in The Will to Change: Men, Masculinity, and Love, you’ll respond to hooks’ central claim by deciding whether you want to challenge, agree, or extend the ideas presented. The paper should be between 4-5 pages, using Times New Roman, 12-point font, double spaced, no cover pages or extra/unnecessary spacing. INVENTION STRATEGIES Step 1: Before crafting a convincing argument of your own you must first listen carefully to hooks’ claims and understand what claims she’s making and why. How is she contributing to our understanding of masculinity in America? Why does her argument matter? After reading and annotating hooks’ book write a summary of the text. Your summary will demonstrate your understanding of the reading. You are to present the author’s main idea(s) in your own words. Step 2: Once you’ve written a summary of hooks’ main ideas, start reading other experts on the subject who have similar and different positions of American masculinity. You are welcome to use the course readings and films as source material, but you’ll need to also search the library database and reputable popular magazine articles to explore a range of arguments on the matter of gender and society. After consulting a hand-full of experts and maybe even interviewing family members and friends chart how additional assertions on the subject extend or counter hooks’ claims. Step 3: Brainstorm and/or craft an outline where you make an assertion that is a direct response to hooks’ work. Be sure to bring an outline or some brainstorming ideas for the paper to class with you on Tuesday, February 26. Map out what rhetorical strategies you’ll use to craft and form your essay. Also, consider what supporting evidence you’ll use to convince readers of your point.A well-crafted thesis statement and topic sentences that relates back to your thesis and identifies the main point in the paragraph it accompanies.
