Professional Socialization in Nursing

Nurse practitioners should be skilled enough to practice professional socialization in nursing. Professional socialization is defined as the skill to recognize one’s professional identity and role internalization in practice. The professional socialization skill is very helpful for nurse students and graduates in doing effective communication with the healthcare team. Moreover, professional socialization skill enable nurses to adapt to the hospital environment and build their identity in the healthcare team (Ke, Kuo & Hung, 2017).

The professional socialization skill helps nurses in performing to the best of their potential. We can promote professional socialization in a healthcare setting by providing skill-based training and professional education. Nurses need the professional socialization skills to keep up with their nursing norms and responsibilities. Professional socialization behaviors instills the right ethical attitudes among nurses and make them excel in their profession (Ke, Kuo & Hung, 2017).

Professional Socialization at my Workplace

My hospital training as a nurse practitioner helped me in my fresh graduate role. I get to know that consultation and collaboration are necessary skills for nursing practice. Nurse practitioners are required to socialize well with members of the healthcare team and patients so that individualized care plans can be made and optimum care can be delivered. I was appropriately trained to develop interpersonal skills with my patient by showing empathy, care and accepting the patient’s needs. I have observed that showing empathy and compliance to patient needs are not possible without collaboration between health care team. As far as interpersonal collaboration is concerned, nurses are the primary care providers and acts as a bridge between patients and healthcare providers. Hence, professional socialization skills enable me to engage in interpersonal communication and showing empathy to my patients (Ke, Kuo & Hung, 2017).

Patriarchal Nursing System

In my nursing practice, I have also encountered patriarchal healthcare system which was a major hurdle in applying professional socialization skills. I believe that patriarchal nursing is a source of professional imbalance and nurses are directly influenced by male dominance in the healthcare profession. As a female nurse practitioner, the issue of patriarchal dominance has been experienced by me in some cases. This dominance made it difficult for nurses to voice their opinion on treatment decisions and their expertise are often neglected when the healthcare team is consisted of male members who practice this patriarchal dominance. Such a male dominant environment is a source of hindrance in providing quality care and nurses are unable to perform autonomously. I have personally observed that female nurse practitioners are discouraged in giving opinion on patient treatment and care plan. In a patriarchal system, nurses are asked to get some strong evidence about their treatment preferences and opinions which is sometimes biased and not justified (Skinner, 2017).

Professional socialization is the process by which individuals acquire the specialized knowledge, skills, attitudes, value, norms, and interests needed to perform their professional roles acceptably. Through the process gradually, a sense of belonging and unique professional identity will develop. Self-image, role concept attitude, values, and personality are regarded as the interactive domain associated with the concepts of professional socialization. Professional socialization is a complex process with four critical attributes: learning, interaction, development, and adaptation (Mousavizadeh, Ashktorab, & Shabani, 2016). Comprehensive educational programs, competent role models, and the provision of adequate field experiences are the main concepts that are regarded as the antecedents of these attributes. They have either positive or negative consequences for the professional development of nurses. In order for nurses to integrate within the profession, professional socialization must occur. The goal of professional socialization is to help develop a nurse’s identity (Zarshenas et al., 2014).

Work environment and corporate culture, the gaps between theory and practice in nursing and community’s attitude toward nursing profession are effective factors in nurses’ professional socialization (Zarshenas et al., 2014). Promote personal and professional capabilities, reform of resources and organizational structure and training structure, are the strategies for improving nurse’s socialization. Among the factors involved in nurses’ socialization, formal education system and teachers can have the greatest impact positively or negatively on the professional growth and development of nurses (Dinmohammadi, Peyrovi, & Mehrdad, 2013). Therefore, planning to facilitate and promote the professional socialization of nurses, with emphasis on improving the education system and bridging the gap between theory and practice should be considered.

Reflection

Professional socialization is essential for the development of a nurse’s identity. The patriarchal health care system is still dominant, but the scenario is changing gradually. Even though the change in the healthcare, gender equilibrium is slow, it can be regarded as a positive step toward a balanced health care system. Respecting other health care providers, regardless of the gender is one of the main focuses of professional socialization. I think that it is the duty of nurse educators to introduce, describe, and promote the concept of professional socialization among nursing students.
