Discussion 2: Annotated Bibliography

In each week of this course, you will research and select three (3) peer-reviewed, scholarly sources to develop an annotated bibliography that you can use in your Doctoral Study. You will need to take the three sources and synthesize the references into a single narrative annotated bibliography that compares/contrasts or supports your study. For example, you may develop three references that will fit into the Nature of the Study (or any other component) and then the synthesized version will help you in developing your Prospectus/Proposal. Please see this week’s Learning Resources for the Sample Annotated Bibliography Template, which you should use to annotated bibliography.

By Day 3

Post your synthesized annotated bibliography narrative that includes an explanation of how these references relate to one or more components of your Doctoral Study and incorporates specific references to the Doctoral Study Rubric.

Annotated Bibliography

Hayes, J. & Hayes, J. (2016). Seven keys to a Successful Tax Practice

www.taxpreparerconnections.com

The article explains seven ways to have a successful business and how to keep at least 70% of your clientele. Among the suggestions are; getting the proper training and education-there are many tax classes available for training in tax preparation and tax laws, develop a business plan-develop a mission/vision statement that reflects you and what is most important to see your business grow. You should also include all valuable information about your business, financial information, products and services, and plans for the business. The article also explains other ways like: branding and marketing your business, providing excellent customer service, managing your time by making a “To Do” list, getting a planner, or even a calendar, make sure to collect payment from your clients, and lastly, diversify your services, by offering other financial services you can expand your business to year-round other than just seasonal.

Hunter, Chauncy. (2016). The Three M’s of Growing your Tax Business

https://www.accountingweb.com/practice/growth/the-3-ms-of-growing-your-tax-practice

Like Hayes (2016), Hunter (2016) goes on to make suggestions on how to grow a tax business using the three M’s; Market, Message, and Media. By marketing your business, you can target a particular group for your business, such as taxpayers. Marketing is putting your business out to the public to see what you offer, how much it will cost, and the benefits of doing business with your company.

Next, is Message, this is to answer the question “Why” (Hunter,2016). This is to mean, Why should consumers choose your business over all of those out in the market. Your business should be unique and offer services that they cannot get elsewhere. Moreover, lastly……….

Media, this answers the question of how you will deliver your business to the public (Hunter.2016). There are many forms of media or advertising that are used to get your business out there, like TV, radio, newspapers flyers, billboards, email. Direct mail, and websites (Hunter,2016). There are many forms of media, but there are also pros and cons to them also. Hunter (2016) suggests direct response media get messages to specific groups. For tax services, it can also be useful to use TV, radio, direct and email.

Taxing Subjects. 2015. How to Start A Successful Tax Preparation Business

https://taxingsubjects.com/our-blog/business-strategy/how-to-start-a-successful-              tax- preparation-business/

Like Hayes (2016) and Hunter (2016), the article goes on to say that there are ten basic steps to become a paid tax professional. The first four are no-brainers; set your goal, get training and education, get experience and get your credentials and PTIN and EFIN numbers from the IRS, also best practices and procedures from the IRS.

The article goes on to suggest developing a networking strategy and business plans. You will also have to decide on the structure of your business (sole proprietorship, corporation, or LLC), and file for business licenses.

The next step was also suggested by Hunter (2016) and Hayes (2016), identifying your clients or target market, and what services you will offer. Will you be a seasonal tax business or a year-round?

The next two steps involve what technology, software packages, tax preparation software, computers, printers and scanners, telephones, office equipment, business bank account, credit card processing equipment, laptop/tablet and smartphone for business meetings and other business out of the office.

Lastly be professional, have the correct credentials, offer your clients the best experience and knowledge you have. Starting any business takes time and patience, and a significant investment in time, but the outcome will give you a business to be proud of.
