Scenario
The scenario below describes the Davis family. For your paper you may choose any 1 of the 3 children.
Marilyn Davis, age 40 and her husband George, age 42, have 3 children: Judith age 17, Michael, age 14, and Jenny age 8. George recently lost his job due to company cutbacks. He has become depressed and apathetic. Both Marilyn and George worry about finances and sometimes argue in front of the children. They also have different parenting styles with George being more authoritative and Marilyn sometimes too permissive.
Children:
1.Judith (female age 17) has been struggling in school. Her grades are dropping and she does not have any goals after completing high school. Her parents are concerned that her friends are a negative influence. Judith feels her parents unfairly judge her friends and are too strict. Judith and her parents argue frequently about school, curfew, etc. Marilyn is concerned that she is not as close to Judith as she used to be.
2.Michael (male 14) has also been struggling in school. Michael works hard and is involved in activities at school, but cannot keep his grades up. His teachers suspect he may have a learning disability. Michael feels different from the other kids who are able to keep up with their school work and as a result he has reported low self-esteem (describes himself as “stupid”). Michael is very close to his mother and they spend a lot of time together doing homework and attending his various activities. He is distant and quiet around his father.
3.Jenny (female 8) is very shy and reserved. She often feels left out because her parents are focused on her older siblings. She likes to read and spends most of her free time in her room. She is concerned about her father not working and often asks for reassurance about the family finances. Jenny does well in school, but does not have a lot of friends.
