How should we prioritize the protection of biodiversity

Human development and population growth have resulted in large scale environmental degradation and deforestation, and the resulting loss of habitat is driving the loss of biodiversity at rates 1000 times the normal rates of extinction. This is particularly true in the tropics regions, which host more than 50% of the Earth’s biodiversity. The Half Earth Project created by biologist Edward O. Wilson, professor emeritus at Harvard University, proposes to set aside one-half of the Earth’s terrestrial and marine ecosystems for the preservation of the remaining species. In this short PBS News Hour segment, Dr. Wilson outlines his Half Earth conservation argument. https://youtu.be/Zq3w7cldgMU (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. This bold initiative has ignited a debate in the scientific community as to how much and how fast we must act to protect the remaining biodiversity and to slow the rate of extinction. 1.
