It is important to improve the health of a community though proper monitoring of the performance of the community to improve its health status. There are many entities associated with the general improvement of a community health. The community has a big role to play in the response to the health issues which affect it. This means there should be a comprehensive approach in the process of maintaining a community health as well as improving it. This article discusses issues associated with the development of a community based program which aims at reducing the impact of alcohol and substance abuse.

Community health is important in the process of improving the general health of a community. The problem identified is that many people in the community have an alcoholic and substance abuse tendencies which has been a priority in the community. From a community health perspective, a clear analysis of the community health profile is critical in the identification of critical health issues (World Health Organization, 2015). It is important to gather accurate assessment of all the factors which influence the community health and proper selection of the changes and preventive measures needed.

Alcohol and substance abuse community program in this case is developed based on the fact that the elderly community is highly affected. In preparation of the program, there are key factor to consider in relation to the cause of the situation. The continued use of alcohol has been associated with depression which causes a damage in the functioning of brain cells and the nervous system. The program created should provide a systematic withdrawal from alcoholic behaviour (Noosorna and Wongwatb, 2009). The symptoms linked with alcohol withdrawal are however known to range from mild to serious.

The program is set to educate members of the target population to assume best behaviour practices which make them stay away from alcoholic and substance abuse behaviours. A recovery and treatment plan is also critical to rehabilitate the addicted part of the population. Those that drink once in a while are unlikely to have withdrawal symptoms once they quit the abuse (Babor and Stenius, 2010). The symptoms range depending on the time an individual has spent on alcohol or other substance abuse.

There are risk factors and issues which are experienced by the population which is highly involved in alcohol and substance abuse. The symptoms associated with the abuse of alcohol can be taken to prove the effects associated with the drug. Cases of mild alcohol symptoms start showing up barely six hours after taking alcohol. These symptoms include; anxiety, shaky hands, headache, vomiting, sweating, insomnia, and nausea. This is also associated with situations of hallucinations, high blood pressure and racing heart. The risks associated with abuse of substance should be properly protected to create a potential health behaviour. In a relationship, people should not stay in isolations. Risk factors include parents using drugs may end up suffering mental illnesses, cases of child abuse and maltreatment, as well as inadequate supervision. This means the program should concentrate in parental involvement. In the community there is a great risk of violence and poverty within the neighbourhood (Noosorna and Wongwatb, 2009). This means protective factors should be put in place such as faith-based resources and after- work/school activities.

In the society, the norms and laws which a community respects may favour the abuse of substance. Cases of racism and lack of economic opportunity can arise. This means that laws and policies should be set to limit the availability of alcohol and other substances abused by communities. The protective factors which can be used in this situation include hate crime laws and policing alcohol availability.

The heath needs of the community should be considered in the process of developing a sustainable and healthy society. There are critical barriers which hinder the process of treating alcoholism and substance abuse. Ethical consideration is critical which in promoting alcoholism and substance abuse in the society. Beliefs that some drugs were made to specific societies by their ancestors. This makes it difficult to convince individuals from the behaviour of substance and alcohol abuse. The lack of enough resources for treating and recovering addicted individuals has posed a great threat to inhibiting substance abuse. The lack of adequate resources risks the population and the whole society because those that are addicted are not kept in the right infrastructure to contain the situations. The funding process is critical to the process of providing adequate care in the process of treatment and recovery. In the process of getting funds for the program, several players should be involved (Babor and Stenius, 2010). The program should be sponsored by local organizations so the community takes part in its implementation process.

In creating solutions to the barriers, the community should be educated to develop a characteristic of ignoring misleading ethics. Matching the appropriate resource and recovery/treatment process is critical to the development of a sustainable treatment procedures. The legal infrastructure should create regulations which give ethical restrictions towards abuse of substance. Equal treatment of the target group is important to reducing the excessive consumption of alcohol. Communities should always seek to be involved in activities seeking to reduce the obstacles which hinder the process leading to drug free society.
