Students will read and analyze a personal recovery story, choosing one book from the books listed on the syllabus.
Then, complete a 4 page paper, describing the nature of the particular addiction (ie: mental and physiological effects, impact on relationships, social influences, role of shame), treatment (including those methods that may be particular to that particular type of addiction), and challenges of recovery as demonstrated in the book. Be sure to include treatment methods that may be associated with the addiction and the particular challenges the individual faced in recovery. In your opinion, why/why not was the treatment helpful? What would you recommend for treatment? *** the book to analyze: Moyers, William (2006). Broken: My story of addiction and redemption. New York, NY: Penguin Books.
